Proper support is incredibly important – look for a package offering 24×7 direct access to instructors, as anything less will not satisfy and will also put a damper on the speed you move through things. Never buy certification programs which can only support you via a message system outside of normal office hours. Companies will always try to hide the importance of this issue. The bottom line is – support is required when it’s required – not at times when they find it cheaper to provide it.

The best trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres around the globe in several time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, no matter what time you login, help is at hand, avoiding all the delays and problems. Unless you insist on online 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. You may not need it throughout the night, but consider weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t ask many questions – it’s more than likely they’re just a salesperson. If someone pushes specific products before understanding your background and whether you have any commercial experience, then it’s definitely the case. Occasionally, the starting point of study for a trainee experienced in some areas can be hugely dissimilar to the student with none. Consider starting with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. It will usually make the learning curve a much more gentle.

So many training providers only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and forget what it’s all actually about – which is of course employment. Your focus should start with where you want to get to – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle. It’s not unheard of, for example, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying but end up spending 10 or 20 years in a tiresome job role, entirely because you stumbled into it without some quality research at the outset.

Stay tuned-in to what you want to achieve, and build your study action-plan from that – don’t do it back-to-front. Keep on track – making sure you’re training for something that’ll reward you for many long and fruitful years. Take guidance from a professional advisor, even if you have to pay – it’s much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning whether your choices are appropriate, rather than find out after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and have wasted years of effort.

Many people question why academic qualifications are less in demand than the more commercial certificates? With fees and living expenses for university students spiralling out of control, together with the IT sector’s growing opinion that key company training is closer to the mark commercially, we have seen a large rise in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe based training paths that provide key skills to an employee at a much reduced cost in terms of money and time. Clearly, a necessary amount of closely linked knowledge needs to be covered, but core specialised knowledge in the particular job function gives a commercially trained person a real head start.

Just like the advert used to say: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. Companies need only to know what areas need to be serviced, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.

Be on the lookout that any certifications that you’re considering are recognised by industry and are current. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are often meaningless. If the accreditation doesn’t feature a big-hitter like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe, then you’ll probably find it will be commercially useless – because no-one will recognise it.
